This is the story how the unnecessary, countereffective mumps vaccine got to be mandatory.

Maurice Hilleman, who worked for Merck & Co. since 1957, had made a vaccine for mumps and tried to get the CDC to add it to the schedule. CDC (rightly) refused, since mumps is a trivial disease in children. Why would accept the trouble and risk of vaccinating for a trivial disease?

Undeterred, Hilleman started to persuade/bribe states to add the mumps vaccine to the state program. In the end, so many states had been persuaded/bribed to add the mumps vaccine to their program, that the CDC said regarding the federal program: "Oh, to hell with it. We might as well use the [mumps] vaccine."

Next, Hilleman combined the mumps vaccine with those for measles and rubella into a single combination vaccine that became known as the MMR vaccine.

The big money was with the measles vaccine, because the alleged measles virus had been targeted for global eradication. Merck might have had competition (and thus reduced revenue and profit margin) for the measles and rubella vaccines, but they were the only ones with the intellectual property rights for the mumps vaccine.

When MMR vaccine became the vaccine of choice, Merck had cornered the market, because they were the only one who could legally supply the mumps component. The strategy to get the mumps vaccine on the schedule was not to protect people, but to profit off them.

Mumps is a trivial disease in young children, but not in post-pubertal males. If post-pubertal males get it, they can develop testicular inflammation which could make them infertile.

If you don't get vaccinated for mumps, you may develop mild disease as a child and then have lifelong naturally acquired immunity. However, if you do get vaccinated for mumps, any provided protection may wane, and you may develop the disease after puberty, when it may cause permanent damage.

The trick is to get the disease as early as possible, in a period where you have low vulnerability, so that you won't get it in a period where you have increased vulnerability.

That the mumps vaccine is countereffective, is shown by mass outbreaks among fully vaccinated populations. The mumps vaccine has turned mumps from a trivial childhood disease into a dangerous post-pubertal disease.

If the mumps vaccine were completely harmless, it would be one thing. Some societal money would be transferred to the pharmaceutical industry, and that would be the end of it. But in this case we see the old adage, "Profit over patients". Merck and its employees got rich, Maurice Hilleman got famous, and young men got sterile unnecessarily.
