Menelik Historical Site | ዳግማዊ ምኒልክ | Ethiopia

I captured the beauty of King Menelik's home incognito at the Menelik Historical Site. I tried not to disturb the tour guide and captured all this footage without him being aware. I wanted an authentic capture. This is a rare and beautiful place, permeated in history. Ethiopia is amazing.

It's especially amazing to see how in some African countries, Ethiopia is one such country, women have always had a place of significance and power in the society. It was really his wife Taytu Betul who discovered the area, found the height important for security and established Addis Ababa as a capital city and Entoto Mountain as a safe place for their home.

My favorite thing about placed like this (of which I also found in Kazakhstan, Belarus, and Uzbekistan) is the low number of tourists (sometimes zero). I also love that it's not Europeanized, meaning, it doesn't cost 20 euro to enter; there isn't gold chains cutting you off from the thing you're observing; there's no red carpet or recorded tour guide tape you put in your ear; there's no quartering off sections of the exhibit; etc. It's beautiful and free and open.
