A powerful earthquake has left parts of eastern Afghanistan in ruins, killing at least 1,000 people.

The disaster poses a major test for Afghanistan's Taliban government, which seized power nearly 10 months ago as the U.S. and its NATO allies prepared to pull out of the country and has been largely shunned by the world since.

As Redmond Shannon reports, the disaster is already being compounded by a hunger crisis and an economic collapse plaguing the country.
