Other approaches are also employed to gather samples of suspected aberrant cells in order to make a diagnosis. Blood samples are a standard element of each suspected cancer patient's evaluation — partly to identify any negative consequences of cancer, and partly to detect the existence of any other disease.

More advanced approaches may be necessary for some malignancies to either make (or confirm) the diagnosis or determine the most appropriate treatment. Computed axial tomography (CAT or CT scans) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI scans) are becoming more frequently accessible for dogs and may be quite useful, particularly in the diagnosis of brain cancers and determining the amount of tumor invasion.
