Parts of France hit 40C earlier in the year than ever before this week, with outdoor events banned in one area of the country, while Spain had its second heatwave of the year.

Italy and the UK are also experiencing soaring temperatures and scientists have warned that this type of intense heat will become more common as global warming heats the planet.

"I'm 86 years old, I was born here, but I think this is the worst heatwave I've ever seen," Jacqueline Bonnaud told the AFP news agency in the southern city of Toulouse, France.
