Shingles or Herpes Zoster is a common disease that will affect one in three people in their lifetime. This debilitating disease is not as benign as people commonly believe. New evidence has shown an association between Shingles (Herpes Zoster) and heart attach and strokes. But, most people are not even aware of the high risk that they face of acquiring this common condition, much less know that shingles can sometimes be fatal. Because of the high incidence, we should all be aware of the complications, both mild and not so mild, that this condition can cause. It is even more important for us to be aware of what we can do to avoid, if not prevent, this disease. Unfortunately, because of the natural history of shingles of herpes zoster, 90% of the current population is at risk for developing shingles (Herpes Zoster). There are now effective vaccinations and antiviral medications to reduce the pain and suffering caused by shingles, but to take advantage of these therapeutic and preventative measures we must familiarize ourselves with the different options that exist.
