A third suspect has been arrested in the murder of British journalist Dom Phillips and indigenous expert Bruno Pereira, who went missing in the Amazon rainforest nearly two weeks ago, according to Brazil's federal police on Saturday.

"Jeferson [da Silva Lima] was at the crime scene according to all the evidence and interrogations,” police delegate Alex Perez Timoteo said. “He was at the scene of the crime and actively participated in the double murder."

Forensic exams carried out on human remains found in the region confirmed they belonged to Phillips and Pereira. Police said both had been shot with hunting ammunition, with Pereira hit once in the head and twice in the chest and abdomen while Phillips was shot in the torso.

Holding banners for justice, both local residents and Indigenous people gathered to protest and condemn the crime.

Previously, the police also arrested Amarildo da Costa Oliveira, a fisherman who confessed to killing the two men, and his brother Oseney da Costa, who was taken into custody earlier this week.
