Night Drive

One of my favorite things in the world is going on late night drives. It might have started with my dad. Beginning when I was about seven, my dad would wake me up in the middle of night and exclaim “Heather! I killed a man and I need you to help me hide the body!” I will reassure you that my father has never actually killed anyone, but I will tell you that whenever he came into my room late at night and asked me to help him complete some made-up criminal act it meant that we would go on a drive.

On these drives I would sit in my pajamas in my Dad’s old Saturn (he would later trade it in for a Ford Focus) with the windows open and cruise along the windy back roads. I can’t explain the feeling that this would give me – I felt like I was flying, the wind messed up my hair, my arms were stretched into the night, and all I could hear was the whoosh of wind in my ears.
