Why Muslims kill over cartoons. Sabb al Rasul

What is the Islamic law ruling on "insults" against Islam, like Mohammed cartoons? Was Hatun attacked, or the French school teacher killed over a typo in a Sharia text, a Muslim misunderstanding the religion, or is it a direct series of commands from the entire Islamic scholarship, explicit in the law. (Sorry about the abrupt ending. My PC chose that moment to crash and ended the stream.)
