Think BIG & Hyperno & Harry White

One of only five horses to win the Melbourne Cup more than once, Think Big began a lifelong love affair with racing for his owner Dato Tan Chin Nam.

Jockey Harry White was famously late into the mounting yard to ride Think Big before the 1975 Cup after taking a nap between races.

Think Big lived out his days at Harry White’s Gisborne property.

Harry White is the equal record-holder with Bobbie Lewis for Melbourne Cup successes with four:

Think Big ( 1974-75), Arwon (1978) and Hyperno (1979).

Think Big and Hyperno were for Bart Cummings, whose genius was again emphasised by Hyperno, formerly trained by Geoff Murphy.

When he joined Cummings he was regarded as an injury prone has-been and dangerous to be around, particularly for riders.

That's why Hyperno gets the pat as Harry White's best but it was not an effort where his renowned switching off came to the fore.

About 1600m from the finish Hyperno, inclined to pull, collided with Dulcify and nearly fell.

''The loss of of momentum, speed and balance must have been terrific, to say nothing of the inconvenience suffered by White,'' wrote Bill Ahern in A Century Of Winners.
