There is a genus ants like this called Melissotarsus that nest in twigs and stems.

Their bodies are so adapted for living in these stems, that when put on the a flat surface they can’t move themselves. Their legs are turned upwards so they can grip the walls of their tunnels to get better leverage to chew up the wood.
