On June 6, 2022, at approximately 4:33 P.M., I was traveling north on State Highway 97 near Miller Road when I noticed a red Toyota Corolla traveling south with no tags. I then started a traffic stop on the vehicle.
The vehicle then slowed to make a left turn onto Miller Road. Once on Miller Road, the driver then began actively fleeing. The driver continued on Miller Road for approximately three and a half miles and turned onto State Highway 189 South. While on Miller Road, I could see that the vehicle was being driven by a male driver.
Due to the road conditions and dust from the vehicle, the driver of the vehicle was able to create enough distance for me to lose sight of the vehicle. I approached State Highway 189 and saw fresh tire tracks going north. I then turned left to try to regain visual. Once on State Highway 189 near 1780 State Highway 189, I noticed a dust cloud in the driveway and a kid running across the yard.
I turned around and contacted Samantha Carter, who was walking up the driveway when I turned in. I asked Ms. Carter while pointing at her driveway and behind her house if a vehicle had recently traveled through there. She stated, “Yes, they went straight, pointing back towards the road, and they were hauling butt.” I then asked again if they came through the yard, and she stated no. I notified dispatch that I was no longer in pursuit of the vehicle.
Post Pursuit Investigation:
Shortly after terminating the pursuit, I contacted Major McClellan with the Cleveland County Sheriff’s Office. I informed Deputy McClellan about the events that had just taken place. After giving Deputy McClellan the description of the vehicle that fled, he informed me he knows the owner of the vehicle. Deputy McClellan stated that the owner of the vehicle was Charles Slaughter.
Deputy McClellan and I met at the Kingsland Store and then went to Mr. Slaughter’s house. Once at Mr. Slaughter’s house, we contacted his mother. Ms. Slaughter stated her son was not home, and that he had left earlier that day. Deputy McClellan and I then left the residence to head back to Ms. Carter’s. Prior to arriving at Ms. Carter’s house, we noticed Ms. Carter leaving her residence with a white male, who we then identified as Mr. Slaughter.
We contacted Mr. Slaughter and asked him about his vehicle. He stated he did not own the vehicle anymore, and that he sold it to “Smoke.” Deputy McClellan then stated that “Smoke” real name was Royce Hall Jr. I asked Mr. Slaughter if he had any way of contacting Mr. Hall and he stated no. I then spoke with Ms. Carter and asked her if she lived at 1780 State Highway 189, and she stated yes. I asked her if it was okay for me to go to her house and look for the vehicle and she stated yes, but she had to take her son to football practice.
Deputy McClellan and I returned to the residence of Ms. Carter and were able to locate the red Toyota Corolla behind the shop. I notified dispatch to send a wrecker for the vehicle. Millers Towing of Rison towed the vehicle, and I placed a hold on the vehicle for proof of ownership. A case file on Ms. Carter will be turned over to the Cleveland County Circuit Court Prosecutor for the determination of charges. The identity of the driver is still unknown, and the investigation is still ongoing.
