Performance Notes:

It is fair to question the name of the composer of this piece as it has been considered one of J.S. Bach’s works for most of its published life (BWV 508, to be precise). It is, however, written by Gottfried Heinrich Stölzel and was first heard in his opera, “Diomedes.” It would be more accurate to say it was “collected” by Bach, or more precisely, Anna Magdalena Bach, and then included in her notebooks which were later transcribed and published as works by Bach. Regardless of its mysterious beginnings, the aria is wonderfully crafted, and conveys the most heartfelt sentiment—that, “if you are with me when I die, I will go gladly.” For this reason, it rightly has been performed at countless weddings.

The challenge with the piece is to not allow it to be overly affected. The phrases should ebb and flow naturally, but not become overly “dramatized.” The only change in tempo, as marked, is at the end, and even this should be somewhat subtle. There are only a few ornaments in the piece. They should also be performed simply—correctly—without altering the flow of the piece in any way. The performer should be judicious about adding additional ornamentation, or refrain from doing so altogether.
