In this episode, I speak with playwright Joe Janes about the craft of sketch and stand-up comedy. We cover a lot of turf including academia in playwriting, character and the four basic human wants, improvisation and playwriting, the rules of sketch, lacking humor in sketch and whether sketches have to be funny. We also touch base finding opportunities and self-producing (a common theme lately), letting go of the reins, bad habits and the benefits of reading your work out loud. There's so much we cover in this episode, it might behoove you to listen to it multiple times, or at least take notes. I learned so much in this episode. I hope you walk away with so much more.

Joe Janes is an Emmy Award winning writer and teaches comedy writing and improvisation at The Second City and Columbia College in Chicago. He has published three books of his staged work - 365 Sketches, 50 Plays, and Seven Deadly Plays. His full-length plays include Metaluna and the Science of the Mind Revue, A Hard Day's Journey Into Night, Our Christian Nation, The Incident, and Always Never. He served as the artistic director of Robot vs. Dinosaur which created the beach blanket musical - Attack At Bikini Werewolf Beach, Part 2.
