“That’s not a ‘yes.’”

CNN’s Dana Bash was left seemingly dumbfounded when she asked Democratic Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez about whether the congresswoman would support Biden should he run again in 2024 as Rep. Ocasio-Cortez avoided delivering a straight answer.

If there were one video clip, to sum up just how much trouble the Democratic party is currently in, the brief exchange between CNN’s Bash and congresswoman Ocasio-Cortez would be among those to take the proverbial cake.

While appearing on CNN, Rep. Ocasio-Cortez was asked a fairly straightforward question by Bash: whether she’d support Biden if he were to run in 2024.

“Before we go, I just want to ask about President Biden – he is saying he’s going to run again in 2024 – will you support him?”

However, instead of Rep. Ocasio-Cortez delivering a firm “yes” or “no,” she deflected to assert that pondering 2024 endorsements isn’t that big of a deal right now because she and her Democratic colleagues are worried about losing their majorities in both the House and the Senate.

“You know, if the president chooses to run again in 2024 – I mean, first of all, I’m focused on winning this majority right now and preserving a majority this year in 2022 – so we’ll cross that bridge when we get to it. But I think if the president has a vision, then that’s something certainly we’re all willing to entertain and examine when the time comes.”

Rep. Ocasio-Cortez not giving a full answer on whether she’d endorse Biden for another term and mentioning the midterm worries fully encapsulates the internal catastrophes within the Democratic party – those being low confidence among them in Biden and concerns they’re going to lose their political safety nets in the House and Senate this November.

CNN’s Bash called out Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s non-answer on the Biden endorsement topic, responding with, “That’s not a ‘yes.’”

If Bash had assumed at that moment that she was going to get a more hardline answer from the congresswoman, she would’ve been mistaken, as Rep. Ocasio-Cortez continued to reiterate that endorsements for another potential Biden presidency can wait because Democrats need to keep their sights “on winning a majority.”

“Yeah, you know, I think we should endorse when we get to it. But I believe the president has been doing a very good job so far, and should he run again, I think that…I think it’s…we’ll take a look at it. But right now, we need to focus on winning a majority instead of a presidential election.”

Another aspect that Rep. Ocasio-Cortez’s non-answer on whether she’d endorse Biden reveals is that Democrats are likely very aware that what has their midterms in jeopardy is likely Biden himself. It’s almost as if some Democrats want to maintain a safe distance from Biden due to the perilous midterms expected to not shine favorably for Democrats.
