The Most Dangerous Explore Retro and Me Have Ever Done! Why Did We Do This?

These are the former Smoky Mountain Cabins located in Cherokee, North Carolina. They were vacation rental cabins located by the Oconaluftee River. The Retromantic and I had been filming all day and happened to see this roadside find. It was dusk when we arrived, and we were reluctant to stop here. After we talked about it, we thought it would make a nice video with plenty to film since there were a good number of cabins here.

We expected the usual fare of abandoned places: decay from lack of maintenance, vandalism, and things left behind. We did not expect what we found. There were syringes in many of the cabins along with some prescription medications. In one location it was apparent prescription pills were being ground into powder. Drug paraphernalia was abundant. It was readily apparent from the buckets of human feces, large amounts of garbage, water jugs, and other items that people had been squatting here. The smell as one can imagine was terrible. The foul odor along with the sights were definitely not for weak stomachs. We believed people came there at night and were expecting someone to show up while we were there. It was somewhat surprising we didn't find anyone there as it was. We didn't hear it at the time, but towards the end of the explore while doing my outtro with The Retromantic, voices from nearby can be heard if you are using headphones. We had been hearing noises during most of this explore, so it's likely people were there and just staying out of sight. No one bothered us, fortunately. We did not find much from the rental cabin business left behind nor did we see any vintage items. As a matter of fact, it appeared the cabins had been updated at some point.

These cabins were nice at one time and looked like a great place to spend a vacation. They were convenient to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park and also to anything in the Cherokee, North Carolina area. Now, they have been excessively damaged with abundant refuse to the point they may not be salvageable. The Retromantic stated this place had the most destruction she had ever seen in an abandoned hotel, motel, or resort.

One final note: we do not recommend going to this location even in the daytime. Drug addiction is a very powerful and relentless adversary, and those afflicted can be dangerous. In our opinion, this place is not safe even during the day. I always take precautions to ensure The Retromantic's safety and well being, and this place was no exception. This is the sketchiest and most dangerous place we have ever explored. It's the first time I have been on high alert for an entire collab.

If you are suffering from drug addiction, below are a couple of links that you may find useful. The Retromantic and I strongly encourage you to get help. Remember, you are NOT alone.
