Performance Notes:

Just as popular in concerts and recitals as it is in its original place in the first act of Puccini’s “Gianni Schicchi,” “O mio babbino caro” enjoys very frequent public performances. In the midst of a story of feuding families, the aria stands as a tender moment between a daughter (Lauretta) and her father (Gianni Schicchi), as she begs him to allow her to see Rinuccio, the boy with whom she has fallen in love, and who happens to be part of the family with which Schicchi is at odds.
While not indicated in the original score, the piece should be performed quite rubato. The marking at the start of the score indicates “Andantino ingenuo,” which would indicate the singer perform with a simple naivety, and a youthful sweetness. The sound should never be overbearing, but warm and affecting. Each time, the line reaches up to the top note, the performer should linger just a bit longer as the character’s pleas increase in fervor.
