Police shooting in Los Angeles, California, United States, August 5, 2020 - An officer with the Los Angeles Police Department’s Hollywood Division is recovering after being struck in the forearm by a fellow officer during an incident involving a suspect believed to have been suffering from mental illness. Police received a call at 2:25 p.m. on Aug. 5 about a man attempting to cut himself in an apartment the 1100 block of North Wilton Place. They found suspect, 32-years-old, in the apartment holding a pair of scissors and a Rottweiler dog on a leash. Officers attempted to speak to suspect and de-escalate the situation, but he suddenly released the dog and they both charged at the officers. Police used a fire extinguisher and bean bag shots, and at least one officer fired a gunshot, accidentally striking another officer in the right forearm. Suspect, who was not struck by gunfire, was subdued and taken into custody for evaluation and treatment. Los Angeles Fire Department paramedics transported the injured officer to a hospital where he was treated and released. The dog was also injured and was taken into the care of Animal Services and treated. A veterinarian was unable to determine whether the injury to the dog was caused by a gunshot or sharp instrument, police said. The LAPD’s Force Investigation Division responded and is investigating the officer-involved shooting, which will likely take weeks. It will be reviewed by the chief of police, the Los Angeles Board of Police Commissioners and the Office of the Inspector General to determine whether the use of deadly force complied with the department’s policies and procedures.
