Shadow Box for a SHIPMATE! | Keepsake Chest | 2021/001

So today I am completing a Navy Shadow Box for a Navy Chief Petty Officer who is retiring after 20 years of service. This video was originally filmed as Instagram Stories, and was not intended to be a full length video for YouTube. But the project was too unique and deserved to be documented. It is mostly narrative of completed steps, without the traditional "action" shots of wood being milled, etc. To most people its a woodworking project, but to the recipient it symbolizes their career and years of service to our country.

The purpose of this video is to show all the steps that went into building this keepsake box with the shadow box integrated into the lid. My first one, but definitely not my last.

The back panel is covered with a blue velveteen material that is attached with spray adhesive. Using my Ryobi 18V hot glue gun, I can secure everything to the back panel, I just need to remember to use a little extra glue on the smooth metal pieces. I always vacuum out the interior as best I can, before placing the Plexiglass front panel. You can use glass too, your choice.

Shadow boxes are easy to make, lend themselves to creativity, but the real reward in making them is seeing how much they mean personally to the recipient and how it depicts them and their service.
