What Makes for a Good Lead?? ( #Salsa #Kizomba #Bachata #Brazilian #Zouk Social Dancing)

The connection is always the most important thing. Being able to read your partner and understand what they are capable and uncapable of doing!

Next is up having a Fun dance.
We dance to have fun. But Understand that you will not vibe with everyone. Just like you cannot be everyone’s friend. You WILL Not be everyone’s favorite dancer. (side note: the cheat code to having a higher probability of having a good dance. Is to become the best dancer you can become. )

How do you know if somebody is having fun?
Hm, they smile and the body language speaks that they are comfortable. Usually it’s a relaxed atmosphere and we are just jamming to the music. Social dances are not the place to try and learn new steps, for example imo. You can’t be comfortable with a new person if you try to execute a new move and need to be Barry of other dancers in the area.

Advanced Levels
Advanced Dancers hear and respond to changes in the music: hits, breaks, feel changes, etc. Being on time/beat is one (important) thing, but actually dancing to the song is next level amazing because it hardly ever happens. bonus points when the lead knows the song and can predict feel changes and leads accordingly.

So For Beginner Levels:
Good understanding of the rhythm - it doesn't matter if you lose it occasionally and have to pause and return to it; but if you're dancing the whole song off-beat or not even knowing how to do the basic step... Just go to a few more classes.

Don't look at your feet and also don't stare straight at the follower's eyes the entire time (think of it as if you're having a conversation - 100% sustained starting at the person's eyes would be weird)

Learn and apply the proper hold - don't hold the follower's hands too tight, and please put your hands where you were taught to put them (i.e. have your right hand high on the follower's back, not their waist)
Lead the moves you know, try multiple times if necessary - but don't try to force the follower into it if they're not doing it (and also don't try to teach it to them on the dancefloor). I really wouldn't mind if a leader did the same 4 moves again and again during the whole song!

Don't try to have a full conversation while dancing.
Have Awareness of the Dance Floor. You are responsible for the followers safety !
