Eric Adams Opposing Popular School Reform Measure

One of the biggest determining factors to student success is class size. Parents in New York City have continuously said that their priority is to reduce class sizes in the city's schools. However, Eric Adams is opposing such reforms passing in Albany.

Hi, it's Jake the teacher. oh, jake the teacher. yeah, I was off today because of the coronavirus, unfortunately. It sucks. I was wondering if I could give an update on a hugely important issue that's not getting nearly enough coverage. sure. in education. yeah so you know you would think the new york times daily news you know all the media would be covering this but today is the last day of the legislative session in Albany in new york. and we have a bill on the floor they have a deal for mayoral control renewal for eric Adams to be in charge of the school system again for another two years. he was asking for four Kathy hope was asking for four. so this is a compromise. A lot of people want to get rid of mayoral control because it hasn't helped schools or kids or anything. but part of the deal is that it includes class size reduction targets that will have to be phased in over the next I think. and it would bring class sizes to new york city so this is why this is so huge. it would bring kindergarten through third grade down to 20. it would bring the middle of fourth grade to eighth grade down to 23. and at high school, the other grades would be capped at 25. and you know this would not be all at once so it doesn't shock the system. and you know mayor Adams is opposing this. and they're the doe is spinning like crazy. but you know this is something that parents have been requesting you know in parent surveys as one of the top priority priorities for years. smaller class size.
