In devotions I came across this verse in Psalm 78:9-10:

"The children Ephraim, being armed, and carrying bows, turned back in the day of battle. They kept not the covenant of God, and refused to walk in his law; and forgat his works, and his wonders that he had shewed them."

I wondered why this great and mighty army being armed and carrying bows would turn back in the day of battle. What kind of army does that? Especially in the very day and onset of battle. Typically, in any battle if an army turns away, they battle it out until one turns away out of defeat.

They had the appearance of force and power, but they stood for nothing. The warriors of Israel were powerful, potent, expert in every weapon of warfare, and fearsome. But there was decay that lead to deadness. They slowly eroded away from keeping the covenant of God and regarded it as nothing. Which caused them to refuse to walk in God's laws He lovingly gave them for their blessing and protection. They further downgraded into forgetting His works and mighty wonders He had done.

What I saw was what the religious landscape of this nation has become. They fit the exact picture of the children of Ephraim. The great multitudes of believers are the children of God who have been given everything. Yet over a long period of time this generation has become those who stand for nothing though given everything.

There is a terrifying peril of lowering standards. God wants not only courage and strength He wants the sweetness of a one on one relationship with His children. It is really sad when I think of how many people out there that only look at outward deceptive appearances.

They think because of the size of buildings, the brilliance of teachers, keynote conference speakers and religious celebrities, that that is knowing Jesus Christ. And yet they have never once met the risen Lord, have never heard His sweet voice or felt His wonderful, loving Presence. These will turn away in the coming days of battle and stand for nothing because they have never known Him. Make sure who you stand for now before the days of battle begin.

"Courage we shall need, and for the exercise of it we have as much reason as necessary, if we are soldiers of King Jesus."
