Canned Beverage Organization | Build it YOURSELF! | 2022/11

My household has a soda problem. My son and I have different tastes and favorites, and his is much more than mine, so to take advantage of bulk deals at the supermarket, my wife usually buys 3 to 5 cases during every shopping trip. Unfortunately, this means we usually have a dozen or more difference cases of soda being stored in our garage. and up until now, it was on a small shelf that was straining under the weight of all that liquid and aluminum.

So, I jumped in Sketchup and modeled a storage system that took into account the size of a standard soda case, and design it based on the standard size of a sheet of plywood, 4 feet tall to be specific. My first attempt was seven shelf tall and one case wide. Then I recounted my inventory, and realized I needed it to be two cases wide. The single case width is probably fine for a family that has normal consumption levels, or 84 cans.

The final prototype holds 168 cans, which is two cases wide and 4 feet tall, and uses a little over half a sheet of 3/4" plywood. Which at the time of this build is $75 for a sheet. I broke down the plywood with my track saw into the two widths which would make up the sides, and then the shelves, cleat, and the top and back. Then I broke those down into the needed sizes and quantities with my miter saw.

Everything fit together perfectly, and after applying glue and 18 gauge brad nails, I had a new "soda tower" which holds 14 cases. The design takes advantage of the perforated dispensing point built into every case, and prevents people from tearing into the top of the box through the handle hole.

Safety note, anchor it to a wall if you have small children to prevent it from being tipped or pushed over in a caffeine induce sugar rage, and consider putting the more popular flavors on the top, to keep it bottom heavy.
