I wanted to get back into media preservation at some point....

I didn't get to accomplish as much as I wanted to there this year, but I will share this before I end up sitting on it too long.

I effectively commissioned this rip (Found a listing on an auction site and threw the money down) for the folks who work at @FemboyFilms to add to their efforts. Why did I do this? Because as far as I could find on the internet, the only known encodes were hardsubs. In the modern anime era, hardsubs annoy me. So I figured to try to find the actual video of this anime. It turned out the laserdisc was rare enough to sell for a hefty price, so it cost me a good chunk of money I could have used to go into investments, which I started going heavily into this year. I hope it was worth it!

If you're unfamiliar with this, it's an anime adaptation based on the NES/Famicom Ninja Gaiden trilogy, and it oozes the late 80's/early 90's anime OVA style, especially in it's Ninja Scroll-esque hyperviolence. It's also very weird in the context of the Ninja Gaiden canon, as it simultaneously retcons and focuses heavily on Ryu and Irene's relationship so there's some awkwardly-placed romantic tension that was logically resolved way back in the first game, and also foreshadows a seemingly abandoned plot point. (Not even the canceled Ninja Ryukenden on Megadrive seemed to follow whatever plot thread THIS was going in...)
I wish I knew what Tecmo was thinking when they were working on this - especially in regards to how it may relate to what plans they had for Ninja Gaiden as a series of games. Perhaps what became "Ninja Gaiden Trilogy" was meant to be a standalone original SNES entry with it's own assets and plot? That's just speculation, mind....

Considering what I've heard about the likes of Project A-ko and whatnot, I'm taking it many laserdisc anime have lost their film masters, so a good Laserdisc rip may well be the best it's ever going to look.

The encode of this was done similarly to the encodes of the Fire Emblem OVA laserdiscs I commissioned many years ago. (I still have those, you FE Memesters! THESE HANDS still have the blasted .ts files sucking up gigs of my harddrive space!)

For the time being, I'm posting this RAW because I want to highlight that it's not hardsubbed. Softsubs - as in, subs you can turn off - may be put in later. I will probably just toss in a softsub version of what the hardsubs were even though I got the impression the FemboyFilms staff weren't exactly fans of those subs, because, well, they can be turned off anyway.
