DIY Goat Shelter from Pallet Wood

Our old barn does a great job keeping our critters out of the elements but it isn’t exactly wind-proof, so Megan built this enclosure for the goats to give them a little extra warmth on these cold nights. She had a vision and brought it to life – the goats approve and she’s proud of what she created!

We purchased these hardwood pallets from our local farm store. Typically you can find pallets for free if you know where to look and have time, but we were in a pinch and bought these for a fair price. We broke these down with a reciprocating saw and a 6TPI blade. This method has always worked “fair to middlin’” – one of these days we may invest in a pallet buster pry bar but this is the best method we have on hand.

After the pallets were broken down, Megan reassembled them so there were no gaps between the boards. Then she put the three sides together so the structure had two walls and a roof. The wall separating the barn stalls will serve as the back wall of the goat shelter. Ragon “tested” the structure to make sure it would hold a rambunctious goat and we are pleased to say it passed.

The final step was to run over the whole structure with 60 grit sandpaper to knock any splinters and rough edges off. Then we carried it to the barn and put it in its place. We recommend measuring your barn door PRIOR to assembly so you can be sure it will fit through your opening. We forgot to do this but thankfully we got lucky and it wasn’t a problem.
