Balkans Mideval Fortress | Old Town Bar, Montenegro | Eastern European Castles

Today we are taking you to the Old Town of Bar. We will walk around the Old Fortress, show you around and tell you a little bit of history of this place.

This fortress is situated on a 4-hectare hilltop just four kilometers from the sea. The fortress is now an open-air museum and the largest and most important Medieval archeological site in the Balkans.

The outstanding cultural importance of this fortress comes from the mixture of different historical styles visible on individual buildings.

First mention of this fortress dates back to 8th century A.D., and is occupation has changed hands through out the times.

The fortress remained occupied until 1979 until a disastrous earthquake destroyed most of the fortress structors, but the surrounding area still remains vibrant today.

The entire area of Bar is surrounded by water and mountains. The Adriatic Sea on one side and over the 1600 meter high Mountains towards the east to Skadar Lake.
