Wanted man dead after gun battle with deputies in Spring Hill
Authorities say a man was shot and killed Tuesday after leading Hernando and Pasco County deputies on a manhunt that ended in a gun battle.
Hernando County Sheriff Al Nienhuis and Pasco County Sheriff Chris Nocco held a joint news conference to paint the scene of what led to the deadly deputy-involved shooting.
The whole situation began in Pasco County. Around 2:30 a.m., Sheriff Nocco says a man and two women entered an 89-year-old man's home in Hudson. They tied him up, stole things from his home and took off in his car, according to law enforcement.
Nocco said the 89-year-old was able to free himself and called 911.
At this point, the situation crossed counties into Hernando. At around 6:44 a.m., investigators found the elderly man's stolen car on fire on Dandelion Court in Spring Hill – about 25 minutes away. That is now being investigated as arson.
Also in Hernando County, deputies received reports of a man jumping fences in a Spring Hill neighborhood. Around 1:20 p.m., Sheriff Nienhuis said he invaded another elderly person's home where children hid inside.
Working together, authorities with both counties tried to make contact with the man, who they say had made his way into the second home's garage. As deputies tried to talk to the man, later identified as 42-year-old Victor Torres Jr., from outside the garage, they say they were met with gunfire.
Authorities say they returned fire as Torres ran out of the garage and down Davenport Lane. As he was running down the street, Sheriff Nienhuis said Torres was firing gunshots back at deputies, who fired back at him and struck him.
Law enforcement officials say they rendered aid to him before he was transported to the hospital. But, Torres was later pronounced dead at 2:05 p.m.
"You're going to see heroism, discipline and training," Nocco said. praising the way law enforcement handled the situation.
The two women who allegedly accompanied Torres in the home invasion are in custody, both sheriffs said. At this time, authorities say they are cooperating with the investigation.
Torres has a violent criminal history and was a convicted felon, according to Nocco and Nienhuis. They said he was also a known gang member.
"His actions dictated our actions," Nocco said.
There were no injuries to any neighbors, according to investigators. A minor injury was reported by one of the Hernando County deputies, who was injured by glass debris from the shooting.
During the manhunt, the Hernando County Sheriff's Office temporarily urged neighbors to stay inside or avoid the area around Cobblestone Drive and Davenport Lane in Spring Hill. That's where authorities initially said they were actively searching for a wanted person.
The deputy-involved shooting is under investigation by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. State officials are conducting interviews with witnesses and deputies.
