Effective Tree and Brush Control Using Tordon RTU

We have a lot of low-quality trees and shrubs growing in our fence rows and as part of our ongoing homestead reclamation project we are working toward getting all of these undesirable plants knocked out. Stump sprouting is a huge concern and based on the research I’ve done the best option for us to get this junk gone for good is to cut it out of the fences and treat the stump using Tordon RTU.

Before we dive into the whole project I’m starting with a few problem areas closer to the house because they bothered me the most last summer when I was mowing the yard. I had cut or trimmed these trees and shrubs several months ago so I took a moment to cut the stumps near flush with the ground to open up a fresh "wound." The reason I did this is because after approx. 30 minutes to 1 hour after cutting a tree it begins to scab over in an attempt to heal itself. By cutting the stump near flush it could be treated effectively and there will likely be fewer problems with the stump interfering with my lawn mower this spring.

We got a quart of Tordon RTU for about $15 from our local farm center and it comes with a handy squirt nozzle. It is ready-to-use (RTU) so no mixing is required and it doesn’t take much to treat a stump (my dad liked to say “a little dab’ll do ya”). You can also purchase Tordon RTU online using the Amazon Affiliate link above. Overall this was a really easy task and I feel pretty good about us getting our fence rows back as soon as we’re ready to devote the time to this task. Be mindful of desirable trees and shrubs in the immediate vicinity because Tordon RTU can affect the roots of nearby plants.

Also, this kind of thing could be avoided entirely by routinely cleaning along fences to prevent trees and brush from growing there in the first place. Either by mowing, herbicide, or whatever, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. At the time we published this video we have lived on this farm for about 9 months and the previous owners of this property chose not to spend their time maintaining the fences (no judgement – there are only so many hours in a day). We are applying the elbow grease now and once this is done we’ll keep the fences clean so we won’t have to do this again.
