Cumberland Gap - Traditional Banjo Song

Cumberland Gap is traditional folk song. I sing and play it on the mountain banjo clawhammer style. Seems like nobody plays it the same way. Either as an instrumental or with different lyrics. Can be played on the guitar as well.

Cumberland Gap - Traditional - lyrics
performed by Dan D. Dirges
Clawhammer Banjo

Me and my wife and my wife's pap,
We're all going down to Cumberland Gap
Lay down boys and take a little nap,
Fourteen miles to Cumberland Gap.

Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
Way down yonder in Cumberland Gap.

Old aunt Dinah, if you don't care
I'll leave my liquor jug sittin' right there
if it's not there when I get back
I'll raise hell in the Cumberland Gap

Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
Way down yonder in Cumberland Gap.

Cumberland Gap with its cliffs and rocks
Home of the panther, bear and fox.
Cumberland Gap is a mighty fine place,
Three long rivers running by this place.

Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
Way down yonder in Cumberland Gap.

Ole Dan`l Boone on Pinnacle Rock,
Killed many Injuns with his old flintlock.
The first white man in the Cumberland Gap
Was ole doc Walker, an English Chap.

Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
Way down yonder in Cumberland Gap.

Well the Wilderness Road is rugged and long,
(aint for no one but the brave and strong)Only fit for the brave and the strong.
Should trouble come along (around) and things go wrong,
We’ll all pull together and sing this song.

Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
Way down yonder in Cumberland Gap.
Cumberland Gap, Cumberland Gap.
Way down yonder in Cumberland Gap.
