How to Build a Goat Milking Stanchion | DIY Milking Stand from Pallet Wood

Building this dairy goat milking stand from recycled pallet wood was easy and quick!  This design was modeled off the stanchion our friend Anne of All Trades made, with a few design tweaks to better suit our needs.  It works great for our Nigerian Dwarf goats but this design could be easily adapted to work with larger goat breeds as well.

We found the PERFECT pallet to make the platform and only had to remove a few boards and nails from the back. Megan sawed another pallet in half to form the legs and fasten everything together with screws. The stanchion was made using two leftover pallet stringers — the holes for the forklift hold a Nigerian Dwarf perfectly! One side was secured upright and the other swings on a lag bolt. Finally we fixed a feeder to the upright half of the stanchion so our girls can get a full belly during the milking process.

Overall this project turned out great and the finished product is sturdy, lightweight, and does exactly the job for which it was made.

Why dairy goats? After watching so many homesteads with dairy goats Megan felt like it was something she wanted to take on. One of our goals with our farm is to grow as much of our food as possible and goat milk is a wonderful source of dairy. Why Nigerian Dwarfs specifically? Nigerian Dwarf milk has a high butter fat content, which means a cream line should be present and we can make butter, which is Megan’s primary goal. We’ll also be able to use the raw milk for cheeses, yogurt, soaps, and lotion, as well as a host of other things. Nigerian Dwarfs are also small so they’ll be easier for Megan to milk and are less intimidating to our young children.
