Is Tit for Tat the Best Strategy?

In this monologue, I want to address a particular aspect of our socio-political discourse. There seems to be a pattern developing across political aisles that says the best way to deal with your political opponents is doing to them what they have "done to you". This means if they go after your jobs you should go after their jobs, if they cancel you then you should cancel them. But is this strategy stable? Is this kind of attitude sustainable?
