2021 Tata Safari SUV

The new Tata Safari SUV has been launched in India. Prices for the new flagship SUV starts at Rs. 14.69 lakh, and go up to Rs. 21.25 lakh. (All prices, ex-showroom, Delhi). The Indian carmaker has also unveiled the ‘Adventure’ persona of the Safari, which is priced from Rs. 20.20 lakh, going up to Rs. 21.45 lakh (ex-showroom, Delhi). The homegrown automaker gave us the first glimpse of the SUV in the form of Gravitas concept at the 2020 Auto Expo. However, the SUV was shown in its full glory last month on the 72nd Republic Day as Tata Safari. The Indian carmaker started pre-launch bookings for the SUV on February 4, 2021 with a token amount of Rs. 30,000.

The new 2021 Tata Safari is available in a total of nine variants across four trims - XE, XM, XT and XZ. It is essentially a three-row version of the Harrier, which comes in both six-seater and seven-seater options. The company is offering 7-seater configuration across variants, however, customer will have to choose from XZ+ and XZA+ variants, if they are looking for 6-seater version.

Tata Motors’ flagship SUV is built on the new IMPACT 2.0 design philosophy. It is a second product to be based on the Optimal Modular Efficient Global Advanced Architecture (OMEGARC) platform, which is derived from the Land Rover D8 platform.

The aesthetic appeal of the Safari is underlined by a slightly restyled chrome-studded front grille which is further complemented by a tri-arrow theme. It gets Xenon HID projector headlamps, dual function LED DRLs with turn indicators, front fog lamps, signature twin light LED taillight, 18-inch alloy wheels, roof rails with Safari branding, panoramic sunroof and more. Dimensionally, the new Safari gets a length of 4,661 mm, width of 1,894 mm and height of 1,786 mm. The wheelbase remains unchanged at 2,741 mm. It is available in four colours - Daytona Grey, Royale Blue, Orcus White and Tropical Mist.

On the inside, the new Safari sports a dual-tone Oyster White paint scheme complemented by Ashwood dashboard. It is equipped with an 8.8-inch floating infotainment unit with the brand’s IRA connected car technology as well as Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and voice recognition compatibility. Other features offered on the SUV are premium Benecke Kaliko Oyster White leather seat upholstery, seven-inch instrument panel, nine-speaker JBL sound system, electric parking brake, panoramic sunroof, ambient lighting, push-button start, Rain Sensing Wipers, Electrically Adjustable and Foldable Outer Mirrors, 6-way Powered Driver Seat with adjustable lumbar support, Steering Wheel with Tilt & Telescopic Adjustment, Boss mode, second-row seats, Fully Automatic Temperature Control (FATC) among others.

In terms of safety, the new Safari gets six airbags, antilock braking system (ABS) with electronic brakeforce distribution (EBD), all-disc brakes, tyre pressure monitor system (TPMS), reverse parking camera, hill descent control, auto-dimming IRVMs, child seat ISOFIX, rear parking sensors, traction control, hill hold control and more.

Under the hood, the new Tata Safari is powered by a BS6-compliant 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, Kryotec turbocharged diesel engine. It is the same powerhouse that also powers its younger sibling, 5-seater Harrier. The oil burner is capable of churning out 168 bhp at 3,750 rpm with 350 Nm of torque at 1,750-2,500 rpm. Transmission duties are carried out by a six-speed manual gearbox as standard along with an optional Hyundai sourced six-speed automatic torque converter automatic unit.
