Architecture on Mars : Projects To Inhabit The Red Planet !!
Architecture on Mars: Projects to inhabit the red planet
February 2021 has been a historic month for the exploration of Mars. Although approaches to the planet have already been in progress for more than 50 years - the first spacecraft entering orbit in 1971 and the first rover landing on the surface in 1997 - this is the first time that three probes from different countries have entered the planet in the same month (China, the United States and the United Arab Emirates). Although all expeditions have their own particular objectives, they will feed the information so far available on the planet through in-depth analyzes of the terrain, collection of samples and various studies. In addition to shedding light on notions that we still do not know about the history of Mars, these missions aim to generate a substantial advance that will allow, in a short time, to send manned spacecraft to the surface of the planet, a plan that Elon Musk envisions for 2022 .
1- MARS COLONIZATION / ZA Architects
Year of presentation: 2013
The German office ZA Architects , through the Mars Colonization project, proposes a large underground network of caverns to start populating the red planet.
2- ICE HOUSE / Clouds AO + SEArch
Year of presentation: 2015
The ICE House project was defined as the winner of the "3D Printed Habitat Challenge" sponsored by NASA . Here, using indigenous materials and 3D printing techniques,
3- INFLATABLE MODULAR HABITAT / Team GAMMA
Year of presentation: 2015
Team Gamma's project was awarded the second prize in the “3D Printed Habitat Challenge” competition. It would use a semi-autonomous regolith additive manufacturing (RAM) system to create a protective shield in situ around an inflatable modular structure.
4- MARS HABITAT / LavaHive
Year of presentation: 2015
The LavaHive project was awarded the third prize in the “3D Printed Habitat Challenge”. LavaHive is a modular, add-on habitat design that utilizes a novel "lava cast" construction technique as well as recycled spacecraft materials and structures. The design incorporates components commonly discarded as a key element of the concept of habitat.
5- MARS HABITAT / Foster & Partners
Year of presentation: 2015
After the presentation of its project to inhabit the Moon , Foster & Partners proposed -in the framework of a competition supported by NASA-, a modular habitat to inhabit Mars.
6- MARS UTOPÍA / IDEA Architecture Office
7- MARS SCIENCE CITY / BIG + Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center
Year of presentation: 2017
Designed by a team of engineers, scientists and designers from the Mohammed bin Rashid Space Center in association with the BIG office ,
8- THE VIRTUAL MARS CITY / KieranTimberlake
Year of presentation: 2017
Architects Fátima Olivieri, Efrie Friedlander, and Rolando López partnered with the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS), NASA, and the Total Learning Research Institute (TLRI) to create a virtual city on Mars , a simulation of a self-sufficient habitat to accommodate 100 people.
9- MARSHA / AI Space Factory
Year of presentation: 2018
The Marsha prototype, from the AI SpaceFactory agency , is the winning proposal for the "NASA Centennial Challenge.
10- 3D PRINTED HABITAT / Hassell Studio
Year of presentation: 2018
The Hassell Studio Habitat , in collaboration with the Eckersley O'Callaghan (EOC), was shortlisted as one of the top 10 entries in the NASA Centennial Challenge .
11- MARS CASE / OPEN Architecture + Xiaomi
Year of presentation: 2018
Mars Case is a prototype of a minimal dwelling to inhabit Mars. Through this project, OPEN Architecture envisions an ideal house, which perfectly combines technology, design and architecture. It integrates the individual electronic devices provided by Xiaomi into one synthesized product.
12- MARTIAN SEED OF LIFE / Warith Zaki + Amir Amzar
Year of presentation: 2019
Researching material alternatives for early settlements on Mars, Malaysian architects Warith Zaki and Amir Amzar propose to create a bamboo village.
13- NÜWA / ABIBOO Studio
