Performance notes:

The “American Dream” has long been thought of by many as something akin to “fame and fortune,” but for me it is much simpler--like the sweet pleasure of sitting in the backyard on a comfortable summer evening watching my children play. This piece is my attempt to capture the feeling of those fleeting and rare “perfect moments” we all occasionally might experience, when everything (at least in our own little corner of the world) is just right. It can be an almost dreamlike experience if you let it, and as you feel it come to an end, the feeling of “just right” may seem to wither, but you are left with happy memories of that moment. I find myself often ruminating on such times and I am thankful for them.
The music is in a sense inspired by the music of film composer, Dave Grusin, and in particular, his beautiful score for the movie, “On Golden Pond,” which I first saw in a theater at the age of nine. Ever since then, I’ve been a fool for sentimental music, and for the idea of spending my summers in a shabby, well lived-in house on a lake.

The opening is perhaps the most difficult both technically and musically. The lines should be played in a playful manner. The piano begins to form its melody at the meno mosso with interruptions from the soloist. At the Andante con moto, the piano motivates the pace. There should be flow and ebb to each phrase (sempre con rubato). Through the full statement of the melodic section and the remainder of the piece, the flugelhorn and piano move in tandem. Care should be taken that the sound remains warm even as the dynamic range stretches to higher levels.
