Our Beef Steer Goes to the Butcher

Today we hauled our beef steer to the meat processor. It was a bittersweet moment but we are very thankful for the meat this animal will provide for our family. We consider raising meat animals an incredible responsibility that should not be taken lightly – this steer was cared for and had a good life on our farm and now we are blessed with high-quality beef to feed our family.

We purchased this steer last summer as a 7 month old calf from Futrell Farms in Cadiz, KY. The Futrells are wonderful folks and have a high-quality beef herd. If you are in the Western KY area and are in the market for beef, look no further. Our steer fed on hay and grass in our pastures as well as a high-protein calf grower feed to help him gain mass quickly. The last two months we finished him on a mixture of whole corn and feed.

We will have a video up in the coming weeks when we get our steer back from the butcher going over the cuts of meat we received, why we chose some of those cuts, and how much it cost for us to raise this steer from purchase to processing. Pricing can vary greatly by location but for documentation and reference purposes we will share that information. When that video goes up we will link it here.
