The church

The term “church”, as we understand it, was unknown in Jesus’ time. However he told his disciples, “I will build my church [ecclesia]” (Matt 16:18).
The English word ‘church’ derives from the Greek kyriake and means Lord’s house. This refers to a building and is not the word used in Matthew 16.
