City police said a male suspect was shot by police after striking an officer with a vehicle Thursday night in East Baltimore.
Both the male and the officer suffered non-life-threatening injuries, police said.
Police said the incident happened Thursday night around 9 p.m. in the 2200 block of E. Biddle St.
Baltimore Police Commissioner Michael Harrison said the incident began after officers were investigating a vehicle that was possibly involved in multiple armed robberies. As the officers approached, the driver of the vehicle struck one of the officers, who fired twice and wounded the driver. The driver crashed a couple of blocks away, Harrison said. As he got out of the vehicle, he was apprehended by officers, Harrison said.
The alleged suspect, who was shot in the shoulder, was transported to a hospital and is said to be in stable condition. The officer was transported to a hospital where he is in good condition, Harrison said.
Harrison said he reviewed footage from one body-worn camera from the incident, but that footage from a second officer’s camera had not yet been downloaded late Thursday night.
Mayor Brandon Scott said he was thankful no one was seriously injured, and he complimented the officers on their initiative.
“They were doing exactly what we are asking them to do,” Scott said.
Late Thursday night, the crime scene spanned several blocks, but largely remained quiet as dozens of police personnel huddled behind the crime scene tape.
Munir Bahar, president of the nearby COR Health Institute, which provides fitness opportunities and other resources for youth, said his organization has been working to improve the area.
”We’ve been developing these blocks for years and totally transformed it,” he said of the facility at 1201 N. Collington Ave.
In 2015, Bahar and his anti-violence group, 300 Men March, organized a march from Baltimore to Washington to draw attention to the city’s violence.
That year, the city saw violence surge above 300 homicides, and it has continued to do every year since.
Bahar said Thursday night that he was outside near where the shooting happened about 30 minutes before. He watched as detectives worked behind the crime scene tape.
”Something has got to give,” he said.
