The bright dancing lights of the aurora (Northern or Southern Lights) are collisions between electrically charged particles from the sun after entering Earth's atmosphere.

The lights are seen above the magnetic poles of the northern and southern hemispheres. They are known as 'Aurora Borealis' in the North and 'Aurora Australis' in the South.

Color variations are due to the type of gas particles colliding.
- Pale yellowish-green auroras are produced by oxygen molecules
(60 miles above the earth)
- Red auroras are produced by high-altitude oxygen,
(heights of up to 200 mile)
- Blue or purplish-red auroras are produced by nitrogen
