A man shot and killed last weekend by Alameda County sheriff’s deputies in unincorporated Hayward was identified Wednesday by authorities as 26-year-old Matthew Harry.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. Saturday in the 24900 block of Second Street, according to a statement from sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly.

Kelly said authorities delayed releasing Harry’s identification because of issues contacting his next of kin.

In a news release after the shooting, the sheriff’s office said Harry fired “multiple shots” at a deputy, and that more than one deputy shot back.

Kelly said Harry was “extremely violent” with a “long, criminal history” that included shootings, assaults and robbery.

According to Kelly, the sheriff’s office received calls about a man “threatening” people with a gun. They sent deputies to the area, surrounded the area and searched the area on foot, Kelly said.

At some point, deputies encountered Harry, whom Kelly said “fired multiple shots” at a deputy.

Authorities have not yet released body-worn camera footage of the incident, but Kelly said the agency will do so within the 45-day limit they’re given under the law.
