A man who was shot and killed last month by deputies during an alleged high-speed chase that crisscrossed Southwest Riverside County has been identified.

Juan Miguel Bejar, 37, of Ventura was shot by deputies June 15 as ran across the freeway and into southbound traffic lanes, near Ethanac Road in Menifee, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

He was hospitalized but died shortly afterward.

The involved deputies were placed on administrative leave per department policy, and their names have not been released. An investigator from the Riverside County District Attorney's Office was leading the investigation, aided by the Riverside County Sheriff's Department Force Investigations Detail.

The sheriff's department said Thursday that the investigation is ongoing.

The June 15 incident began around 4:40 p.m. when border patrol agents spotted Bejar driving on southbound Interstate 15 near Lake Elsinore. He was wanted for assault with a deadly weapon by the Ventura County Sheriff's Department and was allegedly armed, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department.

Agents tailed Bejar to a nearby gas station and tried to arrest him, but he hit his gas pedal, rammed into their vehicles, and drove off, according to the sheriff's department, which was called to assist.

Bejar made it to Temecula before deputies there spotted him and tried to pull him over, but he sped off again. Bejar got onto Interstate 215 and led a high-speed pursuit up and down the freeway between Temecula and Menifee, according to the sheriff's department.

Bejar eventually slowed down and jumped out of his vehicle on northbound I-215, just south of Ethanac. He hopped over the center divider and ran into southbound lanes carrying a handgun, according to the sheriff's department.

It was at that point he was shot by deputies. The department did not disclose how many rounds were fired or how many bullets struck Bejar.

No deputies were hurt during the incident, and there were no reports of injuries to motorists.
