Video released Thursday shows a man fighting with police officers as they try to arrest him for attempting to lure two young girls into his car in Waukegan last weekend.

Waukegan Deputy Police Chief Joe Florip said that a Waukegan police officer was on patrol near Greenwood Avenue and the Amstutz Expressway around 6:15 p.m. Saturday.

The officer was flagged down by two young girls that were riding their bikes in the area.

The juveniles told the officer that a man in a passing vehicle tried to lure them towards his car by talking to them, Florip said.

The juveniles were explaining the incident to the officer when the suspect vehicle drove past and the juveniles identified it.

Florip said the officer then conducted a traffic stop on the suspect vehicle on the Amstutz Expressway just south of Greenwood Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle, identified as Edert Callejas, 34, of Waukegan, can be seen in the bodycam footage explaining his side of the story to the officer.

Callejas said he beeped his horn at the girls because they were in the street. He claimed he did not try speaking to them.

The officer asked Callejas to exit the vehicle after learning the man was driving on a revoked license and without insurance.

He also suspected Callejas to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol, Florip said.

Callejas refused to exit the car and attempted to close the driver’s door and start the vehicle, Florip said.

The officer attempted to remove Callejas from the vehicle and a second officer arrived on the scene to assist.

The bodycam and dashcam footage showed a physical struggle ensue between the two officers and Callejas as he continued to resist arrest.

Officers were able to get Callejas handcuffed and numerous backup officers arrived on the scene, the video showed.

Callejas was offered medical attention at a local hospital but refused treatment, Florip said. The parents of the two children agreed to pursue charges against the man.

The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office approved charges of two counts of disorderly conduct, two counts of resisting arrest, two counts of driving under the influence, driving without insurance and driving on a revoked license.

Callejas refused all field sobriety testing, Florip said. Callejas was released from custody on his own personal recognizance following a bond hearing.

He is scheduled to appear in court again on Tuesday.
