The Bakersfield Police Department has released video of an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead on June 24, 2021.
On June 24th, around 4:21 a.m., two officers were patrolling the area of Fremont Street and Bradley Avenue due to the large number of auto thefts and catalytic converter thefts in the area.
According to police, the officers saw a red Chevrolet Avalanche parked in the roadway in front of a residence, facing the wrong direction into oncoming traffic.
Police attempted to conduct an investigatory and vehicle code violation stop on the vehicle; but failed to pull over, according to BPD.
Police said for about six minutes, two officers were in pursuit of the red Chevrolet Avalanche, which was occupied by three adult males, until the vehicle hit a tree on Highway 99 and the Houghton Road off ramp.
Body camera footage shows an officer discharged his firearm.
The officer immediately observed that the suspect he began chasing was armed with a shotgun, according to police. The officer-involved shooting took place when the officer perceived that the suspect, armed with the shotgun, was turning towards him, according to police.
Police said medical aid was requested immediately and officers rendered CPR and first aid to the suspect. The suspect, 30-year-old Abraham Torres Meza, died from his injuries.
Police said a loaded shotgun was recovered, which the suspect was carrying. Two additional loaded handguns were found in the suspect’s backpack.
Two other men ran from the suspect’s vehicle after it collided with a tree. They were apprehended with no incident and no one else was injured, according to police.
They were arrested for charges associated with catalytic converter theft after stolen property was found inside the suspect’s vehicle.
The officer involved in the shooting is identified as Officer R. Guerrero.
BPD said, “Officer Guerrero has been an officer with the department for one year.”
Chief of Police Greg Terry said, “The public has a legitimate interest in obtaining timely and accurate information about police shootings, and the Bakersfield Police Department is committed to making that information available. We will release the body worn camera footage of officers in critical incidents as soon as it is possible to do so without compromising an investigation. This is our commitment to accountability and professionalism.”
