Last week, PSO’s Maritime Operations and Aviation units responded to a call about a boat that capsized with three people on board. All three were wearing life jackets and remained with their boat. While our helicopter was searching for them, they also fired a flare to assist in their rescue.

Maritime Operations deputies responded to the helicopter’s location and rescued all three boaters, who were uninjured. Here's the view from our Aviation unit who assisted.

Although they found themselves in a situation no boater wants to face, these individuals did exactly what they should do: wore life jackets, fired their flare, stayed with their boat and called 911. We urge you to perform a safety inspection on your boat and ensure you have all safety equipment, including life jackets for everyone on board and flares, ready and in working condition.

Additionally, make sure to file a float plan, so someone on land knows where you’re heading and when you’ll be back. A little preparation before heading out can save your life.
