Chemistry made easy… sounds too good to be true. Can chemistry made simple or chemistry made easy really be true? Yes! and this video will demonstrate to you how it can be accomplished. This is a minute lesson on how to use a graduated cylinder to measure volume of an irregularly shaped object. The technique being used is known as volume by displacement. This technique requires the user to add a known amount of water to a graduated cylinder. The amount of water used should be enough to submerge the irregularly shaped object, but not enough so as to exceed the capacity of the graduated cylinder. Once the water is in the graduated cylinder place the object careful into the water and measure the final volume. The final volume is the volume of the water plus the irregularly shaped object. It is important that you measure the initial and final volumes to the correct precision. That means you must be able to measure to the estimated digit if you are using an analog measuring device.

The mass is usually given in the question but if not, mass is easily obtained by placing an irregularly shaped object on to a digital balance. Volume is obtained either by direct measurement or volume by displacement. Not as easy to get as mass but really not that hard.

It really is chemistry made easy or if you would rather chemistry made simple!
