The Spokane County Medical Examiner’s Office says 38-year-old Vadim A. Grishchuk, the suspected car prowler involved in a shooting with police Saturday, died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

The incident occurred on Saturday, when an person called police and reported a man broke into their vehicle parked near Fifth Avenue and Cannon Street. When they confronted Grishchuk, they said that he pointed a gun at them. According to police reports, Grishchuk may have found the alleged victim’s handgun, which was loaded and secured in their vehicle.

Spokane Police arrived to find Grishchuk armed with the gun inside the vehicle. According to the investigation, police began to give commands and one shot was fired at officers from the vehicle, resulting in officer Brandon Roy firing back at Grishchuck. The Medical Examiner’s Office says this shot, while aimed at the direction of the officers, was actually Grishchuk shooting himself.

After the exchange of gunfire, police tried to save Grishchuk’s life until medical personnel arrived. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene.

No citizens or SPD officers were injured in the incident and Roy was put on administrative leave, which is standard procedure.

The Spokane Independent Investigation Response (SIIR) recovered a loaded handgun and a spent shell casing from inside the vehicle.
