Body camera video captured on Aug. 19 in northeast Albuquerque shows a day that changed the lives of multiple police officers, and so many others who witnessed the violent shootout.

Investigators say it started around 8:30 a.m. when a man called 911 saying he'd been robbed at gunpoint at Central and Western Skies, and that he followed the robbers up Juan Tabo near Manzano High School.

Body camera video shows officer James Eichel spotting a guy with a gun in a very busy area of town. And then, bullets start flying.

Officer Eichel is then shot in the arm. A public service aid rushes to get him a tourniquet to stop the bleeding.

Around the same time Eichel is shot, Officer Mario Verbeck is shot in the neck.

More police arrive on scene. The gunfire doesn't stop.

"He's still shooting, he's hit. He's reloading. Drop the gun! Drop the gun!" screams APD officers.

Eventually, the gunman gets wounded and is on the ground.

"Do not reach for that gun! Roll away from the gun!" APD officers continue to scream.

When the gunfire is over, two more officers end up being injured. One officer with glass in his eye, the other officer with a bullet to the chest, stopped by his vest.

Police say the shooter, James Ramirez, a man with a long criminal history out of California, is facing federal charges. Another man that Ramirez was with is still out on the loose.

As of Friday, two of the four officers have returned to duty.

APD tells KOAT the suspect fired 70 rounds at police that day and that it's amazing no bystanders were hit.

APD also says that with the number of violent crimes in Albuquerque, they are pushing lawmakers to make changes with tougher penalties — especially for people charged with crimes involving guns.
