Houston police are investigating the death of a male who became unresponsive following an incident at 10000 Westpark Drive about 10:35 p.m. on Monday (Oct. 11).

The male, Zachary D. Brooks, 42, was pronounced deceased at Ben Taub General Hospital on Wednesday (Oct. 13).

HPD Special Investigations Unit Sergeant G. Rodgers and Officers S. Mohajer, E. Rossow and I. Ulloa reported:

At approximately 12:45 a.m. on Sunday (Oct. 10), Mr. Brooks was transported to Memorial Hermann – Texas Medical Center after he was found with gunshot wounds at 9818 Bissonnet Street. The suspect in this incident is unknown.

At about 9:15 p.m. the following day (Oct. 10), Brooks left the hospital and stole a vehicle, a blue 2021 Toyota Rav4 as it was left running and unoccupied at the hospital. The auto theft was reported to the Texas Medical Center Police Department and a report was generated. A short time later, at about 11 p.m., officers were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle call regarding the location of the stolen Toyota. Officers arrived and were directed to 9445 Country Creek Drive and located the Toyota, which was occupied by Brooks. As officers approached, Brooks fled the scene and led officers on a lengthy vehicle pursuit that ended near the 10000 block of Westpark Drive where Brooks exited the vehicle and ran from officers.

Numerous officers pursued Brooks on foot and were able to intercept him when he tripped and fell along the north sidewalk/ grassy area of 10000 Westpark Drive. Upon making contact with Brooks, he immediately resisted arrest. After a short struggle, Brooks was handcuffed and observed to be unresponsive. Paramedics transported Brooks to Ben Taub General Hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.

Results of an autopsy by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences into Brooks’ death are pending.
