Hereford man critically injured in deputy-involved shooting

The man shot and critically injured by a Cochise County Sheriff's Office deputy at a Hereford residence last week was booked in Cochise County Jail aggravated assault charges on Tuesday.

At around 3:49 p.m. Nov. 1, 40-year-old Helgar Rosas was reportedly contacted by CCSO Deputy Rene Meza in reference to a report of disorderly conduct at a residence located in the 10000 block of East Coyote Trail near Hereford and Palominas roads.

According to SVPD, when Meza arrived at the residence, Rosas reportedly brandished a long rifle, which was later identified as an air rifle, and made "aggressive movements and statements toward" the responding deputy.

Officials later released that Rosas reportedly told the deputy to shoot him while armed with the air rifle.

SVPD said bodycam footage showed Rosas "pointing the gun directly at Deputy Meza" when the suspect went around the side of the patrol vehicle.

Police say Meza allegedly shot Rosas one time in the chest after the suspect reportedly ignored the deputy's repeated commands to drop his firearm. Officials say the shot caused the 40-year-old to fall to the ground, ceasing "the aggressive movements."

Rosas was then airlifted to a hospital in Tucson for further treatment. After he was first listed to be in critical condition, SVPD shared Tuesday that Rosas has been taken into custody on three counts of aggravated assault and one count of domestic violence disorderly conduct.

Meza was reportedly uninjured in reference to the incident.
