On November 15, 2020, at approximately 1:51 am, deputies assigned to South Los Angeles Station responded to a call for service about a man in the street, armed with a handgun.

Deputies arrived on scene and observed 56 year-old Sam Conner in the middle of Van Ness Avenue, pointing a handgun at a passing vehicle. Deputies shined the patrol car spotlight at Connor and gave him commands to drop the firearm.

Conner turned in their direction and pointed the firearm at the deputies, at which time a Deputy Involved Shooting occurred. Conner was struck by gunfire and immediately fell to the ground while still holding the firearm. Deputies fired a total of 15 rounds at Connor.

Deputies approached and disarmed Connor and immediately provided medical care until Los Angeles County Fire Department Paramedics arrived and continued life-saving measures. Conner was transported to Harbor-UCLA Medical Center where he was pronounced deceased. No deputies or other civilians were injured during the incident.

A loaded Smith and Wesson .357 magnum caliber revolver, was recovered from Connor.
