LMPD releases body cam video of deadly shooting involving U S Marshals

Louisville Metro Police have released the body camera video of a deadly shooting involving a deputy U.S. Marshall.

Police say 25-year-old Omari Cryer was wanted on an arrest warrant for assault, strangulation and terroristic threatening. U.S. Marshalls tracked him to a Louisville home Friday, May 20.

During a news conference on Monday, May 23, police chief Erika Shields explained what happened.

“There was a brief foot pursuit. They ran upon a fence. Subsequently, the marshals opened fire, striking Mr. Cryer,” Shields explained.

Shields added Cryer had a handgun when he was shot.

The video for this story is graphic, and we want to warn anyone who is looking at it that this is the footage provided to Spectrum News 1 by LMPD. In the video, you can see officers chasing after a man they identify as Omari Cryer. In the video, the man appears to reach into the waistband of his shorts and pull something out before he jumps over the fence. Once he lands, you hear two shots being fired from off screen. Cryer then falls down and officers administer first aid.

A gun is shown on the ground near the victim’s feet, but it is not clear from the video if the man was holding the gun at the time of the shooting.

The Jefferson County Coroner’s Office has described the cause and manner of death as “gunshot wounds/homicide.”

Louisville police’s Public Integrity Unit is investigating the shooting at the request of the U.S. Marshals Service.
